Anthrax ha sido uno de los abanderados del Thrash americano durante la década de los 80, junto a bandas como Megadeth, Metallica o Slayer. A partir de los 90, poco a poco fue intentando modernizarse musicalmente con más o menos acierto, en función de cada fan. Recientemente han vuelto a unirse la formación más carismática, dando lugar a otra de esas "reuniones" que tan de moda están ahora.
